Bonaparte, Premier consul, franchissant les Alpes, au mont Saint-Bernard, le 20 mai 1800
Bonaparte crossing the Great St Bernard is an equestrian portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, then First Consul, painted by Jacques-Louis David between 1800 and 1803. Napoleon is shown crossing the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass by the reserve army, an episode that marked the start of the second Italian campaign.
David painted five versions of this portrait, the first of which was commissioned by Charles IV, King of Spain, as a token of understanding between his kingdom and the French Republic. Since 1949, it has been kept at the Château de Malmaison national museum. The next three were commissioned by the First Consul for propaganda purposes and were Napoleon's first official portraits. They adorn the Château de Saint-Cloud (since 1816 in the Château de Charlottenbourg in Berlin), the library of the Hôtel des Invalides (since 1837 in the Musée National du Château de Versailles), and the palace of the Cisalpine Republic in Milan (since 1834 in the Musée du Belvédère in Vienna). The last version had no commissioner and was kept by David until his death (it entered the Musée National du Château de Versailles in 1979 and has been on display at the Louvre Abu Dhabi since 2017)."
An archetypal propaganda portrait, the work has been reproduced many times in engravings, on vases or plates, in the form of a jigsaw puzzle or as a postage stamp, all of which are evidence of its considerable posterity. The portrait influenced artists such as Antoine-Jean Gros and Théodore Géricault.
