The Madonna of the Meadow (Italian: Madonna del Prato or Madonna del Belvedere) is a religious painting by Raphael. The painting is currently on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Painted in 1506, the Madonna del Prato is an early work by the painter, dating from the time of his stay in Florence. The painting is generally considered to be one of two that Raphael painted in Florence for Taddeo Taddei (the other probably being The Holy Family with Palm (Sacra Famiglia con palma), which Vasari saw at the heirs' home in Palazzo Taddei). Philippe Baldinucci recounts how the painting was given to Archduke Ferdinand-Charles of Austria, who placed it in his palace in Innsbruck. In 1663, the painting, which had been in the Château d'Ambras and 1773, was transferred to the imperial collections in Vienna, to the Belvedere Palace, where it was given one of its designations, whereas Madonna del Prato is derived from the landscape. The work is similar in style and subject to the Madonna del Cardellino (Uffizi Gallery) and La Belle Jardinière (Louvre Museum), with a series of preparatory drawings and compositional studies sometimes attributed to one or the other (Ashmolean Museum, Cabinet des Dessins, etc.). The three figures, Mary, Jesus and the infant John the Baptist, are depicted in a green meadow.
