"Landscape with a Red Donkey" (Dutch: Paysage à l'âne rouge) is a painting by the Franco-Russian painter Chaim Soutine, generally considered to belong to Expressionism, painted in 1922-1923, oil on canvas, 81 x 62 centimetres. It depicts a peaceful village scene in a distorted manner. The work is currently in a private collection in Spain.
Originally from Belarus, Soutine, a non-conformist, restless and often recalcitrant artist, moved to Paris in 1913, where he lived in Montparnasse and became friends with Amedeo Modigliani. He was often seen at the Louvre, where he studied Rembrandt and Goya. Between 1913 and 1919, all the elements that would come to characterise his later and more famous work were already present: thick, pasty layers of paint and somewhat distorted images, almost always figurative, in fairly bright colours. He was clearly still searching for his own writing, in which he could give space to the horrors and whims he wanted to express. Although he always denied it himself, even then there were unmistakable influences from Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne.
After Modigliani's death on 24 January 1920 and the death of his partner Jeanne Hébuterne the following day, Soutine, in great distress, left Paris and settled in the artists' village of Céret, in the French Pyrenees, where he had already worked during the summer of 1919, until 1923.
