Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was a French painter born in Lithuania. He moved to Paris in 1912 where he became friends with other avant-garde artists such as Modigliani and Chagall. He is renowned for his Expressionist style and heavy impasto layers, which he applied in his depictions of varies series of subjects, from landscapes to still lives to portraits.
