Le Calvaire, Altar of San Zeno

The Altarpiece of San Zeno is the altarpiece of the high altar in the Basilica of San Zeno, Verona's main church. It features polyptych paintings by the Quattrocento Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna, dating from around 1457-1460. This painted work was commissioned from Mantegna by the Abbot Prothonotary Apostolic Gregorio Correr for the high altar of the basilica, where he had been Abbot of the monastery since 1453. Andrea Mantegna, who was only 26 years old at the time, painted the entire altarpiece in his studio in Padua, and then transported it to Verona where the wooden frame (probably built on Mantegna's instructions) is the original. The originals are in the Louvre (Crucifixion) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours (Resurrection or Noli Me Tangere and Jesus in the Garden of Olives). Eight saints are placed on either side, according to the commissioner's wishes: on the left, Peter, Paul, John the Evangelist [...]
