Le Calvaire, Altar of San Zeno

The Altarpiece of San Zeno is the altarpiece of the high altar in the Basilica of San Zeno, Verona's main church. It features polyptych paintings by the Quattrocento Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna, dating from around 1457-1460. This painted work was commissioned from Mantegna by the Abbot Prothonotary Apostolic Gregorio Correr for the high altar of the basilica, where he had been Abbot of the monastery since 1453. Andrea Mantegna, who was only 26 years old at the time, painted the entire altarpiece in his studio in Padua, and then transported it to Verona where the wooden frame (probably built on Mantegna's instructions) is the original. The entire altarpiece was stolen by Napoleonic troops in 1797 and returned in 1815, with the exception of the three panels of the predella, which were replaced by copies. The originals are in the Louvre (Crucifixion) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours (Resurrection or Noli Me Tangere and Jesus in the Garden of Olives). Like all polyptych altarpieces, the central panel, surrounded by side panels, surmounts a multi-panelled predella, and illustrates the themes of iconography in Christian painting: "The central panel shows the Virgin enthroned accompanied by holy figures, in this case the holy apostles and Saint Zeno, patron saint of Verona, a Byzantine iconography of the victorious Madonna, surrounded by angels. Eight saints are placed on either side, according to the commissioner's wishes: on the left, Peter, Paul, John the Evangelist [...]
