Le Port de la Rochelle

"Above Eternal Rest" is a landscape by the Russian artist Isaac Levitan (1860-1900), completed in 1894. Belongs to the State Tretyakov Gallery. The size is 150 × 206 cm (according to other sources, 152 × 207.5 cm)." Work on the painting began in the summer of 1893, when Levitan was in Tver province, near lakes Ostrovno and Udomlya. In 1894, the painting "Eternal Rest" was presented at the 22nd exhibition of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions ("Itinerants"), which opened in St Petersburg. Prior to the opening of the exhibition, the painting had been purchased from the author by Pavel Tretyakov. Above Eternal Rest" is one of the artist's three largest works, along with "By the Pond" (1892) and "The Lake" (1899-1900). Along with two other works from the first half of the 1890? - 'At the Well' and 'Vladimirskaya' (1892) - the painting 'Eternal Rest' is sometimes combined in Levitan's so-called 'dark' or 'dramatic' trilogy.
