Marriage of the Virgin
The Marriage of the Virgin was painted by Raphael in 1504, while he was training in Perugino's studio. It is kept at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The painting was commissioned by the Albizzini family for the Chapel of San Giuseppe in the Church of San Francesco (Città di Castello). It is signed and dated 1504.
It is a work directly inspired by one of his master's paintings of the same subject, kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, and probably intended to compare their reciprocal performances:
Raphael's painting has a well-developed circular composition, whereas Perugino's is developed horizontally. The structure of the figures and the large building clearly distinguishes Raphael's painting from that of his master. The frame of the paintings is the same, arched at the top. It is now on display at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. A copy replaces it in the original church.
The theme is one of Christian iconography, that of a passage from the New Testament, an episode from the Life of the Virgin known as the "Marriage of the Virgin". In presenting Mary as a "virgin", the Gospel of Luke adds that she was "given in marriage to a man of the house of David, named Joseph" (Lk 1:27). The Protoevangelium of James and the Golden Legend of James de Voragine also give details of this episode in the life of the Virgin, which takes place in front of the temple in Jerusalem, where the suitors each carry a wand; only Joseph's has blossomed, signifying that he has been chosen by [...]
