Matamoe or, Landscape with Peacocks
"The poppy field (Mohnwiese, also Blühender Mohn). - Landscape by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
This landscape was painted during his last summer in Litzlberg, on the Attersee. Along with Roses under Trees, Garden Landscape and Meadow of Flowers, it belongs to a series of atmospheric summer landscapes with lush vegetation painted by Klimt in the manner of the pointillists. The painter worked in small, short strokes, carefully applying the paint to a thin base. The meadow, made up of countless dots and strokes of colour, fills the entire space of the painting in a particular pattern and seems to extend far and beyond the boundaries of the canvas. The artist used the focus screen on his camera to select the composition. On closer inspection, the dots and lines form individual trees, bushes and flowers. Characteristic of Klimt's rejection of directional light: the evenly lit, squarely balanced landscape is perceived as timelessly immersed in itself. Klimt's landscape, influenced by the French Impressionists, does not reflect a fleeting plane, but the harmony and eternal omnipotence of nature.
"Field of Poppies" was produced by the artist especially for the 1908 Vienna Art Exhibition. In its first week, for 5,000 crowns (around €31,500), it was bought by an Austrian industrialist and patron of the arts, Victor Zuckerkandl, and after his death it remained the property of his family.
