Fruit on a Table is an oil on canvas (45.2×73.5 cm) by the French painter Édouard Manet, painted in 1864 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The work, with its medium format and non-committal character, reveals the influence of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, the famous painter of simple, genuinely elegant still lifes. Manet, in fact, produced a very sober composition, very different from the porcelain-filled paintings of the Second Empire that circulated in nineteenth-century Paris, and set out to study the material identity between colour, bodies and the effects generated by the plasticity of light. His friend Philippe Burty testifies to Manet's relationship with still lifes, quoting an extract from a discussion the master had with his only pupil, Eva Gonzales: Manet's prescriptions are magnificently reflected in Fruit on a Table. Manet, in fact, paints the background in broad strokes, limiting himself to the fundamental elements and neglecting the details, and concentrates more on describing the white plane on which the basket of fruit rests, which occupies a large part of the pictorial surface, giving the impression of extending well beyond the edges of the painting. The tablecloth folds here and there, enlivening the rhythm of the composition and reinforcing its luminous qualities, welcoming the moving light that floods the painting and generating small areas of shadow. The colours are harpooned on harmonies of green, counterbalanced by the bright orange of the peaches [...]
