Nikita is the title of a painting by the German-Russian painter Alexej Jawlensky. In 1910, the title was still Portrait of a Boy. This is Marianne von Werefkin's nephew. In 1951, it was acquired by the museum director at the time, Clemens Weiler, for the Wiesbaden museum. It bears the inventory number M 388. The portrait "Nikita" is an oil on cardboard in a slightly vertical format. It is signed "A. Jawlensky" and dated "1910" in the top left-hand corner of the image. The painting is listed in Weiler's 1959 "Catalogue des tableaux", in Weiler's 1970 "Répertoire des ateliers", in the 1991 "Catalogue raisonné" of the Jawlensky Archives, and in the 2014 "Horizon Jawlensky" exhibition catalogue. In 2016, the following statement was made about the painting "Nikita": "From this impressive portrait alone, we know of this boy's existence". But 30 years ago, the public was informed of Nikita's sad fate by the Wiesbaden museum thanks to the memories of Werefkin's nephew, Alexander von Werefkin (1904-1982), Nikita's cousin. According to these documents, Nikita (1899-1917) was the first son of Werefkin's younger brother Vsevolod and his wife Vera, who was also painted by Jawlensky. Nikita had a younger sister, Elisabeth, and a younger brother, Nicolas. Nikita "served at the Tsar's court as a page, in accordance with his status.
