Paris Street, Rainy Day
Rue de Paris, temps de pluie is an oil painting on canvas stretcher by the French painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), painted in 1877. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago in the United States. This painting was produced by Gustave Caillebotte, then aged twenty-nine, for the third Impressionist exhibition organised by the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs in Paris at 6 rue Le Peletier in April 1877, during which he exhibited six works, including this canvas. It was subsequently shown after the artist's death (on 21 February 1894) at the retrospective of his work organised by Durand-Ruel in June 1894. Later, the first major modern retrospective of Caillebotte's work was held at the Beaux-Arts gallery in Paris in 1951, and Rue de Paris, temps de pluie was one of the highlights. The painting was installed by his brother Martial Caillebotte at the Château de Montglat around 1900. Like most of Caillebotte's works, this painting remained in the family of Mme Albert Chardeau, née Geneviève Caillebotte (the artist's niece), until the mid-twentieth century. The painting was bought in 1955 by Walter P. Chrysler Jr (1909-1988), son of the founder of Chrysler, who sold it in 1964 to the Wildenstein gallery, which immediately sold it to the Art Institute of Chicago. An oil sketch of this painting was given by Caillebotte to Claude Monet"; it is now in the Musée Marmottan in Paris. Various preparatory studies are scattered in private [...]
