Parnassus (detail)
Parnassus is a monumental fresco by Raphael (6.70 m wide), painted between 1509 and 1511 and located in the Room of the Signature, one of Raphael's four rooms in the Vatican Palace in Rome.
The painting, probably drawn up with his friend Pietro Bembo, was part of the commission given to Raphael by Pope Julius II in 1509 to decorate the rooms that are now known as Raphael's Rooms in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace.
After completing the vault, The Dispute of the Blessed Sacrament and The School of Athens in 1510, or at most from the end of 1509, Raphael and his assistants devoted themselves to decorating the north wall of the Signatura Room, dedicated to poetry.

Again for this reason, he created an irregular composition for the lower register, with two monochrome representations on the theme of the patronage of literature: Augustus prevents Virgil's executors from burning the Aeneid (185 cm long) and Alexander the Great keeps the Homeric poems in a precious casket from Darius (180 cm long), probably painted by a collaborator on his design.
The sash of the window reads "JVLIVS.II.LIGVR.PONT [...]
