Philosophe au livre ouvert
The Virgin and Child Supported by an Angel under a Garland (in Italian: Madonna col Bambino e un angelo) is a religious painting by Sandro Botticelli, dating from around 1465-1467 and housed in the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio.
Its poor state of conservation means that it cannot be confirmed with certainty, but this painting is probably one of the earliest early works by Botticelli, who at the time was apprenticed to the Florentine master Fra Filippo Lippi, with whom he probably worked on the frescoes in Prato.
At the time, paintings of the Virgin and Child were frequently commissioned by Florentine families, and these compositions enabled Botticelli to improve his style, framing and technique.
The painting joined the collection of Cardinal Joseph Fesch in Rome, who bequeathed it to the town of Ajaccio in 1839.
The work takes up the recurring representation in Christian painting of the Virgin and Child (or Madonna), showing the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, here accompanied by an angel under a garland.
The richly dressed Virgin, wearing a jacket with fine gold embroidery, is standing on a marble pavement, bending over as she prepares to hold the Child offered to her by an angel.
In the background is a pink transenne, while at the top there are a few festoons and garlands at the sides.
The composition is reminiscent of Fra Filippo Lippi's Lippina (c. 1465), but the standing position of the Virgin and the paleness of her complexion suggest that this was one of the artist's [...]
This artwork is a painting from the classical period. It belongs to the baroque style.
