Portrait of Mariana Waldstein, Marquesa de Santa Cruz (Spanish: Mariana Waldstein, marquesa de Santa Cruz), an oil painting by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya (1746-1828), is in the Louvre collection.
Mariana Waldstein (1763-1808) was born in Vienna to an aristocratic Austrian family. At the age of 18, she married a much older widower, the Marquis of Santa Cruz, and came to Spain. Her husband held an important position at the royal court in Madrid, which made him, among other things, Goya's superior as a court painter. She travelled frequently to Italy and also lived in Paris, where she met artists and politicians, including Napoleon Bonaparte when he was First Consul. She was a woman of strong character and expressive personality. The French ambassador Ferdinand de Guillemardet fell in love with her and took a copy of Goya's portrait with him before returning to his country. The scandal was her affair with another ambassador - Napoleon's brother, Lucien Bonaparte. Thanks to her connections, the Marquise acted as mediator in Minister Manuel Godoy's secret negotiations with France. She was passionate about art: she painted oil and pastel pictures, especially miniatures, and also drew and made copies of famous works. Her teacher was the painter Isidro Carnicero. She became an honorary director and member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Ferdinand.
