The Portrait of Walburga Neuzil, nicknamed Wally, is an Expressionist painting by Egon Schiele (1890-1918).
For a long time, the painting was mistakenly called Portrait of Valérie Neuziel. It attracted attention in 1998, when, on loan from the Leopold Museum to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), it was established that it was a work looted by the Nazis. "After twelve years of legal proceedings, the painting was finally returned to Vienna in July 2010 after payment of the 19 million dollars stipulated in an out-of-court settlement."
The painting, constructed as a bust portrait, depicts a young woman leaning forward, looking directly at the viewer. The "simplicity of well-ordered spaces", the dark dress, the white collar, the light background and the sketchy chair back express a secessionist harmony". The painting, done in 1912, corresponds to the Self-Portrait with Chinese Lanterns (32.7 × 39.8 ) done the same year. Both pictures were painted during a particularly fruitful period in which the artist was confronted with the work of Vincent van Gogh. During these months, after Schiele's move from ?eský Krumlov to Neulengbach and before his imprisonment from April to May 1912 for offences against public morality, Schiele painted, in addition to these portraits, several landscapes and several figurative compositions, such as Hermits and Cardinal and Nun."
