Portrait of Young Woman
Portrait of a Young Woman in Profile is a portrait, generally attributed to Antonio Pollaiuolo, painted in oil on poplar panel in 1465. The painting is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, which lists it as one of his most famous works, as well as one of the best-known portraits of women from the early Italian Renaissance.
An unknown woman is shown dressed in brocade, seated, as her posture suggests, in the marble embrasure of a window or balcony, her profile enhanced by the brilliant blue sky in the background. Her blond hair is gathered into a sort of small headdress. The figure's precisely delineated contours and light, contrasting colours are typical of the Florentine school.
Portraits of the same kind, depicting richly dressed women of high rank, were made to celebrate a wedding"; the absence of jewellery would seem to indicate that this portrait depicts a young woman shortly before the ceremony. The exceptionally rich bodice is made from three-coloured brocade (red, white and green) with a pomegranate, leaf and palmettes motif, symmetrical to the central series of ties, and red velvet sleeves embroidered with gold thread. The woman depicted is seated against a balustrade inlaid with porphyry and jewels, similar to the one depicted in the altarpiece of Cardinal del Portogallo (Pala del cardinale del Portogallo (it)) in San Miniato al Monte, Florence, painted by Antonio and his brother Piero Pollaiuolo in 1466-1467".
