Répétition d'un ballet sur la scène
Ballet Rehearsals on Stage is an oil painting on canvas (65×81 cm) produced in 1874 by the French painter Edgar Degas.
It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The work depicts a group of classical dancers waiting to dance, as they gather on the stage to prepare for the event. Some are arranging their slippers and tutus, while others are revising their steps under the watchful eye of a seated figure, probably the dancing master. Although Degas captures a moment of the dress rehearsal, the atmosphere is rendered magical by the refinement of the figures depicted combined with the light that warmly envelops them.
The framing of the painting seems to come from the proscenium scene or the first scene in the gallery: the light seems to come from the front of the stage, from below, illuminating the dancers [...]
