Return of herd
The Return of the Herds is a painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in 1565. It is kept in the Vienna Art History Museum in Vienna.
The return of the flocks does not have its origins in Flemish calendars. Perhaps Brueghel the Elder combined his experience of Alpine landscapes with the compositionally convincing intention of painting a mountain landscape in autumn. In fact, he relegates the traditional grape harvest to the background and gives it little space. The approaching storm draws much of its effect from the mountains in front of it. The herd of cows heading towards the village is one of his freest creations. Seen from behind, the animals appear proportionate to the forest path, their fur rendered in thin layers of transparent colour by a consummate sense of material. If we had to decide which painting in the Months series was executed last, or at least by the quickest and most experienced hand, we could well agree on this late autumn [...]
