Roger délivrant Angélique

Ingres, chef de file du classicisme, à la fois reconnu et critiqué pour son œuvre singulière, fait à nouveau ici preuve d’originalité en puisant son inspiration non pas dans la mythologie grecque mais dans les récits épiques de l’Arioste, dans son Roland Furieux. Il choisit d’illustrer la délivrance d’Angélique par un preux chevalier, Roger. Ce dernier accoure sur son destrier, un hippogriffe, pour occire le monstre marin menaçant la jeune femme. Angélique est alors accrochée au rocher, cherchant à échapper aux crocs de la bête, la tête basculée en arrière, dans une torsion peu naturelle. Ingres aime à distordre les corps, mais ce goût pour la contorsion n’est pas toujours partagé et certains ont surnommé sa toile d’Angélique « au goitre », voire d’Angélique aux « trois seins ».
