Rower in a Top Hat
La Partie de bateau, or The Boater in a Top Hat is an oil on canvas by the French painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), painted in 1878. It measures 90 × 117 cm. It belongs to a private collection in Paris.
It depicts a canoeist rowing on the Yerres, not far from the Caillebotte family estate, where the artist used to spend his summer holidays from the age of twelve. In 1876, Gustave Caillebotte joined the Cercle de la voile de Paris in Argenteuil, which Manet, Monet and Renoir frequented"; he remained faithful to his passion for boating and canoeing throughout his life. Here he paints an elegant friend who has just taken off his jacket but kept his top hat, as if he had just arrived from Paris (some twenty kilometres away) to stay with the Caillebottes. In the background, two rowers are approaching in a rowboat, a subject that Caillebotte developed several times during this period".
This painting was shown at the Impressionist exhibition of 1879. It was the subject of a caricature by Draner in Le Charivari.
On 20 October 1878, the artist's mother, Mme Martial Caillebotte, died and the property was sold in June 1879, putting an end to Caillebotte's happy holidays in Yerres.
The painting was classified as a National Treasure in January 2020.
