Judith II is a 1909 painting by Gustav Klimt. This painting was completed by Klimt eight years after the first version of 1901, and from the latter we can see profound stylistic differences and a modified symbolic relevance. The female figure, depicted in its entirety rather than from the waist down, lends a strong verticality to the painting as a whole, so much so that the lower edge of the painting cuts sharply across the woman's skirt, leaving us almost to imagine that her figure could still continue downwards. The almost disproportionate vertical thrust of the female figures is a characteristic feature of the paintings by the Austrian painter, who used this means of expression to give his subjects a monumentality and elegance that are absolutely predominant in his works. The figurative parts of the body are mainly concentrated on the face, the torso, the hands (a fundamental element) and, albeit in shadow, on the head of Holofernes in the lower right-hand corner. The other pictorial elements in the work recompose in the viewer's eye the remaining parts of the figure, i.e. the woman's hair and her dress, which can only be clearly seen after careful evaluation to be isolated and detached from the idea of plasticity and adaptation to the voluminous forms of the body. Starting from the Art Nouveau concept of the sinuous curved line, Klimt succeeded in creating a particular aesthetic that makes his paintings inimitable in their genre.
