Supper in the House of Levi
The Meal at Levi's is a painting by the Italian artist Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese, in 1573.
The work was commissioned by the Dominican monks of the Santi Giovanni e Paolo church in Venice, who wanted to replace Titian's Last Supper, which had been destroyed in 1571 when the refectory burned down. Confiscated by Napoleon's armies, the painting was kept for 15 years in the Louvre before being returned to Italy at the fall of the Empire. It was then placed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where it underwent several restorations.
The painting is an immense canvas, thirteen metres long. In its lower third, it depicts Christ surrounded by a group of figures (servants, halberdiers and, in front of the two columns, two important figures: the butler or cook on the right, and possibly Veronese on the left) dressed in 16th-century fashion and not mentioned in the Gospels. The work depicting the Last Supper does not take place in an inn in Palestine, as described in the Bible, but in a rich palace of classical architecture, probably inspired by one of those built by Andrea Palladio, the architect who remodelled Venice with inspiration from Antiquity. The arches of a loggia seem to evoke a triumphal arch, the symmetry of which is reinforced by the two balustraded staircases that accentuate the effects of perspective. All the vanishing lines converge on Christ, enthroned at the table of this Venetian banquet. The artist juxtaposes complementary colours.
