The Annunciation
The Annunciation of the Convent of San Marco is a fresco by Fra Angelico, visible at the top of the staircase leading to the monks' cells in the Convent of San Marco in Florence (for this reason, some works refer to it as the Annunciation of the North Corridor, as in Italian: Annunciazione del corridoio Nord). The Annunciation in the Convent of San Marco was painted by Fra Angelico in 1437 or 1442. The fresco covers an area of 230 x 312.5 cm on a wall in the north corridor, just opposite the staircase leading to the upper floor of the monks' cells, at the intersection of the two wings of the dormitory (the monks' wing on the left, the wing for converts and visitors on the right). It is also on the back of one of the walls of the cell of Saint Antoninus, vicar general of the reformed Dominicans, prior and future archbishop of Florence. It is one of Fra Angelico's Annunciations. A typical scene in Christian iconography, the Annunciation to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel is described in the Gospels and in great detail in Jacques de Voragine's The Golden Legend, the standard work of reference for Renaissance painters, which allows it to be depicted in all its symbolism (walled garden, column, presence of the Holy Spirit, evocation of Adam and Eve driven from Paradise). Some scholars, however, see in this painting a representation of the Second Annunciation, that of the Virgin's death.
