The Dreamer or the Ruins of the Oybin
The Dreamer (German: Der Träumer) is a painting by the German painter Caspar David Friedrich, produced between 1835 and 1840.
The painting is an oil on canvas, measuring 27 × 21 cm. It is typical of the German Romanticism movement in terms of the emotion it arouses in the viewer. It depicts part of a ruined religious building. The light of the setting sun appears in the background. The artist plays on contrasts, with an architectural foreground left in shadow, which opens onto the background light of an unknown world. These twin windows represent a doorway to dreams. The horizon is indistinct, a kind of abandonment. The figure seems to be contemplating the landscape, leaning against a pillar, and the viewer finds himself observing a figure who is contemplating in turn, or who is lost in his inner world [ref. needed].
Caspar David Friedrich painted The Dreamer between 1835 and 1840.
