The Glass of Wine
The Glass of Wine (in Dutch: Het glas wijn) is an oil on canvas by Johannes Vermeer. The painting, 66.3 centimetres high and 76.5 centimetres wide, was produced, according to experts, between 1658 and 1659, or a little later, around 1661-1662. It depicts a woman in red sitting at a table in a Dutch interior, finishing a glass of wine. A man, standing behind her, holds a jug in his right hand, placed on the table. In many respects, the composition is typical of the genre scenes developed in Delft by Pieter de Hooch in the early 1650s, and the idea of seduction that emerges is in all likelihood coupled with a moralizing effect.
Vermeer was around 27 years old when he painted The Glass of Wine. According to Walter Liedtke, "no analysis based on artistic conventions can suggest the pure beauty and extraordinary refinement of a painting like The Glass of Wine, which can be considered the first of his fully mature works".
Since 1901, the painting has belonged to the collections of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz).
The depiction of figures drinking around a table, and the motif of a glass of wine offered to a young woman, had already been treated by Pieter de Hooch, for example in The Visit (c. 1657) and The Drinker (c. 1658). On the basis of uncanny similarities with another painting by Vermeer on the same theme, The Young Girl with a Glass of Wine, we have also been able to surmise another prototype, The Refused Glass, attributed to Ludolf de [...]
This artwork is a painting from the classical period. It belongs to the baroque style.
