The hunters in snow
Hunters in the Snow (in Dutch: Jagers in de Sneeuw) is a painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, painted in 1565. It is an example of the Flemish Renaissance. The work is kept at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting measures 117 cm by 162 cm.
This winter painting by Breughel the Elder is one of the most famous snow landscapes in the history of painting. The snowflakes are not falling, as in other paintings, but the many shades of white, dominated by shades of green, believably suggest the atmosphere of a countryside that has long since been covered in snow. Roofs, tree branches and walls allow the painter to confer plastic qualities on the snow.
In the front row, he placed brambles that pierced the snowy mantle and revealed its weight. Men returning from hunting with their dogs leave deep footprints in the snow. As they make their way down to the valley, the viewer is treated to a multitude of winter scenes: from various games on a frozen pond to a roaring fire.
On the horizon, on the right, craggy rocks form a counterpoint to the diagonal of the hill in the foreground, and their mineral forms mark the off-putting nature of winter.
At the time, Europe had been experiencing severe winter weather since the beginning of the 14th century, and this lasted until 1860, what came to be known as the Little Ice Age. But the winter of 1565 in the Netherlands was even harsher, marked by heavy snowfalls"; "horses were reported to be up to their bellies in it".
