The Kiss (detail)
The Kiss is a painting by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, produced between 1908 and 1909. This oil painting on canvas covered in gold leaf is housed in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna. The work is part of Klimt's Golden Cycle and is undoubtedly the Austrian painter's most famous work.
The artist himself and his partner, Emilie Flöge, were probably the models for this painting.
The canvas is square in format, with the two figures at the top centre. It shows a man kissing a woman on the cheek. The couple are embracing. Standing and leaning over his companion, the man is wearing a yellow dress with geometric shapes including grey, black and white rectangles. He wears a crown of ivy leaves on his head, and his face, turned towards that of his companion, is invisible. Kneeling, the woman is also wearing a yellow dress, but different from the man's, with multicoloured circles. Her hair is full of flowers. Her face, with closed eyes, is completely visible.
Her dress hides the man completely, but the woman's dress reveals part of her: her left arm, calves and feet, the curves of her body.
The hands are visible: the man is clasping the head of his companion, whose face is turned towards the viewer, his right hand holding her by the chin and left cheek, and his left hand supporting the nape of her neck as she throws her head back. The woman places her right hand on the back of her partner's neck and holds the man's right hand with her left.
