The soul of the rose
Le pavé de Chailly is an oil painting produced by the French artist Claude Monet in 1865. The paintings are in the collections of Ordrupgaard, north of Copenhagen, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
From 1863 onwards, Monet made frequent visits to Chailly-en-Bière, a village on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. There, he was inspired by the Barbizon school, based in a neighbouring village, and its plein-air painting. The painting can be seen as a preliminary study for Monet's monumental and unsuccessful Breakfast in the Green, which was also painted in the forest of Fontainebleau.
