Miranda - The Tempest is a 1916 painting by the English Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse, 98 x 136 centimetres, oil on canvas. It depicts Miranda from William Shakespeare's play The Tempest . The work is currently in a private collection.
Miranda is a character in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. She is Prospero's daughter. After being deposed by his brother Antonio as the legitimate Duke of Milan, Prospero spends all his time on a small island where he perfects his magical arts. After twelve years of study, he is ready to defeat his enemies, and when fate brings Antonio's ship close to the island's shore, Prospero unleashes a powerful storm with his magic, from which the play takes its title.
Miranda accompanies her father throughout his stay on the island. She has led an extremely sheltered life there and has become something of an outsider. She also has a strong tendency to become emotionally attached. Watching her father, Prospero, talk about the heavy storm made her feel emotionally attached to the fate of the shipwrecked: this is the scene that Waterhouse depicts in her paintings.
Early in his career, in 1875, Waterhouse produced a painting on the theme of Shakespeare's Miranda. In this early work, he depicts her in a classical dress that seems to have been borrowed from classical Greek sculpture.
