Tiger, Lion and Leopard Hunt
The Tiger Hunt is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens produced between 1615 and 1617.
The painting depicts several men dressed in a variety of clothes (two riders in conquistador-style armour, three Ottoman-style riders and two men in tunics) hunting four animals: two tigers, a lion and a leopard. The painting is sometimes called The Tiger, Lion and Leopard Hunt or The Tiger and Lion Hunt.
The composition is based on that of The Battle of Anghiari by Leonardo da Vinci.
Born in Siegen in 1577, Peter Paul Rubens had a considerable influence on European art in the 17th century, and is considered, along with Rembrandt, to be the instigator of the Baroque style. In 1587, he began training in the Antwerp workshop of Adam van Noort. From 1600 to 1608, Rubens travelled to Italy, where he was influenced by Italian Renaissance painters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Michelangelo, as well as Giulio Romano.
Rubens returned and worked in his own studio in Antwerp from the end of 1608 to 1621. In the years 1610 and 1620, the period corresponding to the production of The Tiger Hunt, Rubens' art was imbued with dramatic and passionate themes. On his return from Italy, two series of paintings can be distinguished: the first is characterised by the staggering of the figures in depth, as in The Defeat of Sennacherib, while in the second, the majority of the figures are placed in the foreground, as in The Tiger Hunt.
