Two Old Men Eating
Two Old Men Eating Soup (in Spanish: Dos viejos comiendo sopa) is one of the Black Paintings that decorated the Quinta del Sordo, a house that Francisco de Goya bought in 1819. This work was probably placed high up on the ground floor of the house.
The painting, like the rest of the black paintings, was transferred from plaster to canvas in 1874 by Salvador Martinez Cubells, commissioned by Baron Emile d'Erlanger, a French banker of German origin, who intended to sell them at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878. However, the work did not attract buyers, and in 1881 he donated it to the Prado Museum, where it is on display.
The painting shows two elderly people, it is not clear whether they are men or women. The one on the left, wearing a white scarf, is grimacing, probably because of the lack of teeth. The other contrasts sharply with the first. His eyes are hollow and black, and his corpse-like head is reminiscent of a skull.
The brushstrokes are decisive, applied very freely and quickly. The fingers are full of paint, making them appear arthritic. The spatula was widely used.
