Gabriel Loppé ( 1825-1913) was a french painter, photographer and mountaineer.

At the age of 21, whilst climbing a small mountain in the Languedoc he came across a group of painters sketching and knew that he had found his calling. From here he went to Geneva where eh met the Sziss landscape artist Alexandre Calamé; Loppé was entirely self taught, and pushed the boundaries to become the first to paint at such high altitudes. This feat earnt him the recognition as the founder of the group Peintres Alpinistes, which formed in the Savoie at the end of the nienteenth century. Later in his life Lopé became fascinated by the developing art of photography. His long exposure of a lightning bolt hitting the Eiffel Tower has become an iconic oeuvre and is exhibited in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
