Art Deco is an art movement that originated in the 1910s, became popular in the 1930s and declined from 1930 onwards. The term "art deco" comes from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was held in Paris in 1925. Its aesthetics and principles affect many areas of artistic creation such as: architecture, decorative arts, fashion, books etc. Chronologically, Art Deco is the immediate successor of Art Nouveau. However, the two artistic movements are radically opposed. While Art Nouveau praised organic forms, the “lignes coup de fouet” and arabesques, Art Deco advocated geometric forms, symmetry and a return to a more classical aesthetic.

The Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka is a major figure of the Art Deco movement. Born on May 16, 1898 in Warsaw, she reached the peak of her career in the 1920s, at the same time as the height of Art Deco. She came from an aristocratic family and spent time with the very wealthy Lusupov family during her stay in Saint Petersburg (Russia) from 1914 onwards. In 1917, she moved to Paris and became a student of Maurice Denis and André Lhote. Her first exhibition took place in Milan in 1925. This first event was followed by others in Poland, Paris and New York. In 1939, Tamara de Lempicka fled the war and moved to the United States. She died on March 18, in 1980 in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Her works make references to the Italian Renaissance and Neo-Cubism. They show a meeting between a classical aesthetic and a modern style. Her production will also be a source of inspiration for artists of the 21st century such as Catherine Abel.
