Bacchus and Ariadne is a Renaissance painting by Titian dated 1523. It is part of a cycle of paintings on mythological subjects commissioned by Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, for a room in his palazzo in Ferrara. The original commission for the painting was given to Raphael, but when he died in 1520, only a preliminary drawing had been made, and the commission was passed on to Titian. The theme of the painting was inspired by the works of the Latin poets Catullus and Ovid. The canvas, a major work in the cycle, is now on display at the National Gallery in London. The other major paintings in the cycle are The Feast of the Gods (largely by Giovanni Bellini, on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington), The Bacchanal of the Andrians and The Offering to Venus (both on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid). Ariadne has been abandoned on the shore of the island of Naxos by her lover Theseus, whose ship can be seen sailing away on the left. She is discovered by the god Bacchus, who leads a procession of maenads and satyrs in a chariot drawn by two cheetahs (which were leopards in Catullus' original text, and whose models were probably the cheetahs in the Duke's menagerie). Bacchus leaps into the air towards the frightened Ariadne, intending to take her with him and make her his wife. In the sky above Ariadne, we see the crown that Bacchus has just thrown down, which has become the constellation of the northern crown. The composition is divided diagonally into two [...]
