Baigneuse aux cheveux longs

La Baigneuse aux cheveux longs is a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir dating from 1895 and exhibited at the Musée de l'Orangerie. Depicted in an indeterminate setting, the long-haired Baroness evokes a golden age, in keeping with Renoir's simple, natural sensuality. His paintings of the 1890s have the timelessness of "nymphs" freed from any mythological pretext. As Renoir recalled towards the end of his life: This oil on canvas, measuring 82 x 65 cm, is characteristic of Renoir's "pearly" period. The soft roundness of her face seems to harmonise perfectly with the flesh and hair of her body, while her dark hair resembles the imperceptible movement of vegetation on the ground. Before being acquired by Paul Guillaume, this painting belonged to the famous Marxist Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922).
