Baigneuse aux cheveux longs OF Auguste Renoir
The artwork
Baigneuse aux cheveux longs
La Baigneuse aux cheveux longs is a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir dating from 1895 and exhibited at the Musée de l'Orangerie.
Depicted in an indeterminate setting, the long-haired Baroness evokes a golden age, in keeping with Renoir's simple, natural sensuality. His paintings of the 1890s have the timelessness of "nymphs" freed from any mythological pretext. As Renoir recalled towards the end of his life:
This oil on canvas, measuring 82 x 65 cm, is characteristic of Renoir's "pearly" period. In diffused light, the bather's body and the highly suggestive landscape are criss-crossed by iridescence that blurs the forms. The model for this bather was probably the same as the pianist in Les Noies al piano and, younger, the figure seen in profile in Portrait de deux filles.
The young girl, whose shirts are half down, seems to be ignoring the viewer. As her attention is directed to something to the right, outside the frame, she holds up a drapery that she folds around her waist. The soft roundness of her face seems to harmonise perfectly with the flesh and hair of her body, while her dark hair resembles the imperceptible movement of vegetation on the ground.
Before being acquired by Paul Guillaume, this painting belonged to the famous Marxist Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922).
There is another almost identical version of this painting, dated 1895, which belongs to the Barnes Foundation (Merion, Pennsylvania), but here the dissolution of the landscape is more [...]
