La Grande Odalisque
La Grande Odalisque is a painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres commissioned in 1814 by Caroline Murat, sister of Napoleon I and Queen Consort of Naples (the commission was not paid for after the fall of the Empire). The word odalisque, from the Turkish odal?k, refers to a chambermaid who served the Sultan's harem: various elements and objects evoking this oriental dimension are therefore present, such as a fan, jewellery or a turban. Ingres paints a nude woman seen from the back in accordance with the archetype of the period, i.e. in the form of a naked woman lounging lasciviously, open to the viewer. At first glance, the particularly long back (there are three extra vertebrae) and the unnatural angle formed by the left leg are noticeable. But these deformities were deliberate on the part of Ingres, who deliberately preferred to sacrifice verisimilitude to his vision of beauty. This is confirmed by his sketches, which are perfectly proportioned: the deformation only came about in the final work. Ingres was not trying to reflect the anatomical reality of the nude, but rather to subject his model to his own style, as he had done for La Baigneuse (1808, in the Louvre). La Grande Odalisque was poorly received when it was exhibited at the Salon of 1819".
