Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was born on August 29, 1780 in Montauban. His father being a painter, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was immersed in art world from an early age, distinguishing himself in painting as well as a piano player. He then entered the Royal Academy of Toulouse before continuing his apprenticeship with Jacques-Louis David. Eager for new technical knowledge, Ingres moved to Rome and then to Florence where he affirmed his style by being in contact with Raphael’s work. Unlike in his native country, he was successful in Italy and was even praised by the critics, marking his return to Paris.His work, the Martyrdom of Saint Symphorien, was heavily criticised and thus detrimental to his career. By dint of patience, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres regained his success, which would never leave him, thanks to the purity of his works and their unparalleled composition. This undeniable talent inspired many artists, making Ingres the precursor of a new artistic era. Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres died on January 14, 1867 in Paris.
