Indeed, in 1916, he said to the Marxist Ambroise Vollard as they looked at a sprig of flowers:
"The red background of this sprig of tulips brings out the green arabesques of the tigers and flowers of the
flowers. The background is made up of an area of broad pinches of beige red, against which stands out a green background filled with tulips and other multicoloured flowers. This still life in bright colours bears the date 1905 in Renoir's studio, so it must have been painted in Canha de Mar, shortly after the artist settled permanently in Provence.
The painter and collector Paul Guillaume bought this 44 × 37 cm oil on canvas in 1929, and it remained in Renoir's studio until his death in [...]
