Bouquet of Sunflowers

Vase of Sunflowers is an oil painting on canvas measuring 101 x 85.3 cm by the painter Claude Monet, painted in the summer of 1881. It is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Monet, Manet, Pisarro and Degas formed a group known as Impressionists. They lived at a time when technical innovation and industrialisation were the order of the day. What these artists wanted to achieve was a representation of the natural, a kind of confrontation with urbanised society. This was a time when paintings would no longer be commissioned, but would have to win over the consumer's taste and enter the market. However, this new style of painting was frowned upon, and they exhibited their paintings at the Salon des Refusés. Linked to these innovations, the emergence of photography in the 1950s played a very important role and therefore influenced the paintings produced after this period. In 1860, he began producing still lifes such as Still Life with an Ox (1864) and Still Life with Grapes and Apples (1880). In 1873, he moved to Argenteuil, a region famous for its boat races. The "boat studio" was born. No longer content to paint on the banks of the Seine, he now dared to take to the boat and paint from there. In this way, he would himself experience the fluidity of painting. In the 1970s, he went on a trip to London, leaving his family in France.
