Choristes, dit aussi les Figurants

Les Choristes was painted by Edgar Degas in 1877. It measures 32 × 27 cm. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting, also known as Les Figurants, a pastel on monotype measuring 32 cm high by 27 cm wide, painted in 1877 by Edgar Degas, depicts a group of choristers in costumes singing at the top of their voices to the audience on an opera stage. According to a confession Degas himself made to Henri Meilhac, the scene is taken from the final chorus of the first act of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni, celebrating the engagement of Zerlina and Masetto. As the work was in the repertory of both the Paris Opéra and the Théâtre-Lyrique, the venue is not formally identified, but it was probably the Opéra stage on which the baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure performed. The chorus of Don Giovanni is said to have been inspired by Degas' success in the title role with the baritone, who was also a collector and one of the painter's most important commissions. This is the only painting depicting a purely operatic scene, another showing the Portrait of Mlle Fiocre in the ballet "La Source" by Léon Minkus and Léo Delibes, two versions of another showing the scene from Le Ballet de "Robert le Diable" (1871) and Le Ballet de "Robert le Diable" (1876) from the opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer, in front of which he placed the musicians in the pit, as in L'Orchestre de l'Opéra or Les Musiciens à l'orchestre, Degas preferring to paint the dancers of the Opéra corps de ballet in the dance [...]
