Contra-Composition of Dissonances, XVI
"Contra-composition XVI" (German: Kontra-Komposition XVI, English: Contre-composition XVI, French: Contre-composition XVI, Italian: Contro-composizione XVI) is a painting by Dutch painter Theo van Doesburg housed in the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague.
Counter-composition XVI is the eleventh painting in the series of counter-compositions that van Doesburg began in 1924. This is why it was originally entitled "Counter-composition XI". The current title is based on the book Études uniques pour compositions, in which Van Doesburg included all the preliminary studies for his counter-compositions, and where it appears as the sixteenth.
Counter-composition XVI was created between 27 August and 30 November 1925. On 27 August, Van Doesburg wrote to his friend César Domela Nieuwenhuis that he had completed only two paintings with diagonal lines (Contra-composition VI and Contra-composition XIII), and from 30 November he was included in the L'Art d'Aujourd'hui exhibition in Paris.
Contra-composition XVI was donated to the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in 1934 by Van Doesburg's widow, Nelly van [...]
