The artwork
Détail de L'Atelier du peintre.
The Painter's Studio is an oil painting by Gustave Courbet. Its full title is: L'Atelier du peintre. A Real Allegory depicting a seven-year phase of my artistic (and moral) life. Executed in 1855, it has been on display since 1986 at the Musée d'Orsay, ground floor, in the Courbet room (large formats).

"The painting was first bought by his widow at the posthumous Victor Antoine Desfossés sale, and was used as a backdrop for the amateur theatre at the Hôtel Desfossés (6 rue Galilée in Paris)".
It was acquired by the Musée du Louvre in 1920 for 700,000 francs, donated in part by the association les amis du Louvre, supplemented by a public subscription and a contribution from the State.
A public restoration within the museum began on 24 November 2014 with the support of 1,334 private individuals for more than €150,000 raised through participatory funding and supplemented by patronage of €450,000.
