Portrait de Delacroix, peintre (Portrait of Delacroix, painter) was painted around 1816 and depicts Eugène Delacroix at the age of 18. For a long time it was attributed to the painter and friend of the artist Théodore Géricault, but the latest analyses tend to attribute it to Delacroix as a youthful self-portrait. This attribution is reinforced by comparison with another self-portrait in chiaroscuro dated 1819, known from a black etching by Frédéric Villot. This portrait is characterised by the dramatic effect of the chiaroscuro. It is kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen (inventory 1893.3)." Former collection of Pierre Andrieu, sold for 1420 francs after his death on 7 May 1892 at number 210 under the title Portrait d'Eugène Delacroix par Géricault to M. Marcel, senior civil servant in Paris. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen acquired it for 1510 francs in 1893, which marked its entry into the museum's collections. The painting shows Eugène Delacroix's young face from the front, illuminated by a light source in the top right-hand corner. The direct light accentuates the shadows on the face, which emerges from a dark background that masks the outline of the head and upper body. The expression is hard and the subject is staring at the viewer. Apart from the face, the white collar of the shirt and the red scarf are visible. The hair and dark jacket blend into the darkness.
