Michelangelo was born on Marche 6, 1475. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known as Michelangelo, is one of the most famous artists in the world. He was a painter, a sculptor, an architect and a poet. At the age of 14, he entered the studio of Domenico Ghirlandaio, a well-known Florentine painter. Noticing his particular gift for the arts, the master introduced his young apprentice to Lorenzo de' Medici, known as the Magnificent, prince of Florence and a great patron of the arts, who made him his protégé, marking the beginning of Michelangelo's breath-taking career. At the age of 23, after fleeing to Rome, Michelangelo gained fame and fortune with his sculpture of David. He then established himself as the official painter, sculptor and architect of the Vatican. He worked for many popes. His famous works incudes the David (1501), the Pietà (1499) and the tomb of Julius II. However, it’s with the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, that Michelangelo was universally accepted in the Pantheon of artistic geniuses. Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564.
