Giulia Bellelli, étude pour La famille Bellelli

The Bellelli Family is a painting by Edgar Degas, begun in 1858 and completed in the mid-1860s. It depicts the members of the Bellelli family, who are related to the de Gas family. The painting is in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay. This large painting was begun in 1858 by Edgar Degas during his formative years, following a stay in Florence with his aunt Laure Bellelli. On the left is the portrait of this aunt, Laure Bellelli, sister of the artist's father, with her daughters Giovanna and Giulia, and on the right Gennaro Bellelli, the artist's uncle by marriage. This disagreement is confirmed by private correspondence. The work was exhibited at the Salon of 1867. The canvas remained the artist's property until 1913, when it was transferred to the Durand-Ruel gallery. On the painter's death in 1917, the painting was acquired by the French state via the Musée du Luxembourg for 300,000 francs, with the help of the painter's family, who reduced the price, and patrons including the Count and Countess de Fels. The painting was transferred to the Musée du Louvre in 1929, and to the Musée du Jeu de Paume in 1947. It has hung in the Musée d'Orsay since [...]
