Landscape at Port-Goulphar, Belle-Ile is a painting by the French Impressionist Claude Monet. Painted in oil on canvas in 1886 and considered to be one of the artist's best works, it forms part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
An outstanding example of Impressionist painting, it marks an important phase in Monet's career, following the death of Camille Monet, his first wife. Monet went from being an ephemeral painter of the waters of the Seine to a painter of seascapes. Rodin went so far as to say that this was what Monet had always sought.
This painting is an impressive testament to Monet's wisdom about light, consisting of a perfect study of luminosity combined with a sumptuous tonal exercise, already commonplace in this phase of pictorial mastery represented by the 80s and 90s. The image contains dramatic effects created from these details.
The subject is essentially a depiction of cliffs and rocks in winter on Belle-Ile, a large island on the coast of Brittany that lacks the riverside development of the Seine that Monet depicted. Winter is depicted through the exercise of light, and takes shape in the cloudy sky at the edge of the canvas.
