Jeune femme à la voilette

Young Woman with a Veil is an oil painting by the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, executed around 1876 and currently housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting depicts a mysterious young woman in profile, with shy eyes. A particularly precious pictorial element is the very light, transparent veil that, wrapped around the hat, descends over the woman's face and gently surrounds her, creating an intense sense of intimacy. The intimate atmosphere that emanates from the scene is underlined by a soft, diffused light, the result of a calculated mix of light and dark tones in dense, filamentous brushstrokes. In this painting, moreover, Renoir gives space and importance to the colour black, aware of the lesson of Manet, the author of particularly vivid and brilliant blacks. L he work is surprisingly two-dimensional: the female figure seems almost to be a flat surface, and the only element giving the composition a modicum of solidity are the hands, moving around an object. In this painting, Renoir does not concentrate on a strictly realistic rendering of the subject, but on capturing the harmonies between light and colour, highlighting the changing vibrations of light falling on the soft fabric of the shawl and the lady's [...]
