La barque pendant l'inondation, Port Marly
The Flood at Port-Marly is a series of 4 and 7 paintings by Alfred Sisley in 1872 and 1876. One of them is currently on the 2nd floor of the Musée d'Orsay in section 32 (Monet-Renoir-Pissarro-Sisley). Exhibited at the second Impressionist exhibition, before joining the Adolphe Tavernier collection, it was acquired by France as a bequest from Count Isaac de Camondo. Another version of the painting is in the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. Painted in Port-Marly, 2 versions of the painting are reproduced at the place of their creation on a tour of the Pays des Impressionnistes.
It is an oil on canvas measuring 60 × 81 cm: "In the foreground, you can see the water stretching to the horizon with a few trees and pylons, and in the background a wine merchant's house, 'A St Nicolas', set against the infinite mirror of the water that has invaded everything. In the background there are a few boats and a few human figures in the boats, and a greyish, cloudy sky. The trees and pylons are on the right to balance the picture.
In 1876, when Sisley painted his view of Port-Martly, the Seine was in flood and the town was under water. One building, still standing today, housed a wine and spirits shop, A St Nicolas, as illustrated by its façade, which has been replaced by the current Le Brazza café.
The absence of outline drawing, and the use of patches of colour to represent and colour objects, are characteristic of the Impressionist movement and show the agitation of the [...]
