La neige à Louveciennes (Yvelines)
Snow at Louveciennes is a painting by the English painter Alfred Sisley, painted in 1875 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Alfred Sisley, the famous Impressionist painter, lived in the village of Louveciennes, just outside Paris, between 1872 and 1874. Fascinated by this corner of France, he transcribed its evocative views in a multitude of paintings. In the case of Neige à Louveciennes, Sisley interpreted the melancholy desolation of winter: "his reserved and solitary temperament", observed the Musée d'Orsay curators, "is better suited to the mystery and silence than to the luminosity of the sunny Mediterranean landscapes that so appealed to Renoir".
The photo shows an avenue in Louveciennes covered in a blanket of white snow, creating a hushed, pearly and luminous atmosphere. Note the varied rustling of the trees in the background, sometimes more leafy, sometimes less so, with which the painter re-establishes a secure compositional balance. This balance could potentially have been compromised by the different heights of the two low walls delimiting the path: the one on the right is high, massive, and dominates the street, which is only breathed through by the lower, discontinuous profile of the other wall, the one on the left, which blends into the first buildings of Louveciennes.
