The House of the Hanged Man, Auvers-sur-Oise, is an oil on canvas painted by Paul Cézanne in 1873. The painting is on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The Hanged Man's House was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and was the first painting Cézanne sold to a collector. The village depicted in the painting is Auvers-sur-Oise, 27 km north of Paris. La Maison du pendu (The Hanged Man's House) is an oil painting on canvas measuring 55 × 66 cm and signed by Cézanne in red paint in the lower left-hand corner. The painting depicts a landscape with a complex composition. The scene has an atmosphere of solitude, due to the absence of people and the use of a cool colour palette. From the central point of the painting, there are several axes, including two paths leading to the centre and left, a bank on the right and the branches of a tree leading to the top of the painting. Cézanne was strongly influenced by his friend Camille Pissarro and, as a result, used grainy, fragmented brushstrokes and the pale colours used by the Impressionists. In this composition, Cézanne defied the conventions of art by making deliberate imperfections in perspective.
